As you may be aware, ISB works with outside agencies to obtain Accreditation. Basically, these agencies have created indicators which exemplify school quality and they judge schools against these indicators. If they judge you to be proficient, you then obtain Accreditation, which helps families to know that they are enrolling in a wonderful school when they choose to attend ISB. If you want to know more about this process, you can read about it on Dragons Gate (http://ift.tt/2fyd6F9).
As part of this process, we will have a team of 16 people visit ISB from November 4th - 11th to renew our school's accreditation. These visitors will be reading the reports that have been created by our school committees and conducting interviews with various community members. You may also see these visitors in your classrooms throughout the week at various times. Please feel free to say hello throughout the week, and help to make our visiting team feel welcome while they are on campus.
The Visiting Team will have their office space in rooms 1226, 1227 and 1228 in the MS/HS Library while they are on campus. Please note that these rooms will not be available for student use from Thursday, November 3rd to Friday, November 11th.
Thank you very much for your support of the Accreditation Process at ISB!

Good Morning Middle School!
Futures Public Radio is a new student initiative in Futures Academy. We are a group that is going to be posting podcasts, audio interviews, videos, short documentaries, culture, reviews, poetry, sports highlights, dance and theatre reviews, etc. on our website. We are still in the stage of setting up our site but first we need your help to create some new pieces to put on our site .
Have you heard of Bryn Barnard, our visiting author? Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a professional published author? Have you ever wondered what it really takes to to write an acclaimed novel? WE WANT YOUR QUESTIONS to ask by Barnard himself in our interview.
From Mon- Fri we have a 'questions box' set up in the MS/HS cafeteria and we invite you to add your questions and your name into the box so that we may hopefully ask your questions in our interview.
Please drop a question and your name in our "Questions for Bryn Barnard" box and support FPR in involving our ISB community's questions in our first interview series.
Have a great day!
I opened up this book knowing very little about the French designer Lydia Courteille. I've seen her incredible designs on Rihanna, at trade shows, in magazines, and every time I see one of her pieces, I have a slight heart attack. Her over-the-top and bold creativity is something that I vibe with, so I was really curious and excited that this monograph depicting her life, inspirations and collections was published. Actually, I take that back, it comes out November 16th, but I luckily got my hands on an advance copy thanks to the publisher. I made the bad decision of finally snuggling up to this book around 10:30 pm on a Friday night, thinking I would just look at the pictures and fall asleep. Nope. I was awake until early morning, reading, gazing and overly relating to this incredible woman and feeling so many connections that I never knew!
What caught my attention were many of the depictions of her life growing up, her penchant for antique jewelry and how it opened up the jewelry world for her, and to learn Lydia is a gemologist as well! Like I said, so many relatable moments while reading, I had to rub my eyes a few times. I love the tales from her childhood and the nuances that have connected her to the world of jewelry. Small items or events in her life have all shaped and steered her in the direction of jewelry and it is wonderful to read about these subtle hints she experienced growing up. Acknowledging them and connecting them is so fun.
Her jewelry is art--it is colorful beyond all rainbows and in a league of its own. As you can see from the photos above which I took of some of my favorite pages, she has so many different inspirations. Things like architecture of her beloved Paris, literature, film, her love of unusual gemstones, memento mori, and of course antique jewelry. Lydia has a knack for juxtaposing two completely unique things, creating gorgeous harmony which has her collectors wanting more. I hope to someday meet Lydia and her head-turning jewels. If only the setting could be in Paris at her atelier at Place Vendóme. That would be just as dreamy as this book. Happy reading!

In recent days, and especially yesterday, we’ve encountered significant delays at the Exhibition Centre due to weather and an ongoing security exhibition which finishes today. For the majority of buses this is not a concern, but for buses that travel through East Shunyi and Sunhe areas please note that there is the potential for delay this afternoon and evening.
We’ll attempt to redirect as many buses as we can away from this area, and also inform parents by telephone or SMS of any bus that is delayed by more than 30 minutes.
Kind regards

The phrase “it’s all in the details” has always been a staple to live by in life. Did Fall sneak up on you this year and leave you with no time or energy to invest in purchasing a new sofa? Yet despite that, do you still want to do a little something to spruce up that old set that’s been sitting in the living room for what feels like ages? As much fun and exciting purchasing new furniture and having the ability to keep up with the latest trends can be, it’s not realistic to live like that all the time. The time and energy it takes to take the time to invest in new furniture is a luxury that the today’s busybodies lifestyle doesn’t always allow for (perhaps if we could squeeze in an extra 20 hours into the week then we can revisit that idea).
Thankfully changing your environment doesn’t always have to be dramatic or complicated. If you have a good quality sofa set, the chances of you wanting to trade it in for a new one is not high until you get a few good years of use out of it. Re-upholstering furniture is a great investment when you know the frame is great quality and worth the time and money. The fabric and cushions feel the most wear and can be affected by so many aspects of your daily life but when you re-upholster a piece, you instantly bounce back years into its lifespan. The decision making process involved in re-upholstery is no easy task, we take the time to understand the type and frequency of use your piece endures to narrow down the best options for your needs and wants.
However sometimes you even want to go one step smaller in the size of change you want to commit to and that’s perfectly fine because life gave us toss pillows and slipcovers to mix things up whenever we wish! Investing in a great set of toss pillow inserts can go a long way for you. Once you determine the best size pillow for your furniture, you open up your space to endless options as toss pillows are the greatest accessory to your pieces and manageable with all budgets. If you like to play it safe and don’t stray far from neutrals, you can make any statement you want using bright bold colours and playful textures.
Storage doesn’t become an issue if you want to stock up on a few different options for the season, the best part is that you’re only switching out the pillow cover, the old one will fold up and go back on the shelf in the linen closet for the time being. That being said watch out for a some key factors such as making sure you order zippered covers and ensuring the zipper is suitable for the fabric type. There is nothing more frustrating than a flimsy small zipper on a heavy velvet cover which can potentially snag your insert and cause a tear… we’re guessing cleaning up feathers of off the floor is not your ideal evening?
We can go on and on, slipcovers are multifunctional on their own, you can go big and slipcover the sofa in a complimentary colour to your armchairs or you can tone it down a notch and dress up the dining room chairs in a new colour scheme or playful pattern. But enough of us, we want to hear about your ideas, big and small, modest and daring, nothing is off the table when it comes to transforming the look of your home! We love hearing from you so feel free to add in your two cents on all this or if we’ve stirred up some desire and brought on burning questions, we are only an email or phone call away!
Stay tuned for next week, we hear fabric is up for discussion so grab your glass of wine, a cozy blanket and enjoy!

The indoor-outdoor feel you get by hanging out on your patio might just be the reason why it’s your family’s favorite spot. You can further enhance the level of comfort on your patio by adding covers that can protect you from too much sunlight and other elements. Below are 3 of the most popular patio covers you can choose from:
Lattice
If your home is more contemporary, a lattice-like covering could be a nice addition. Unlike the traditional pergola, a lattice-like structure has thinner and more simply shaped pieces, and forms a more rectangular structure. For a structure like this, using a durable wood is the key to getting many, many years of enjoyment from the space. While a wood like cedar is good, paying extra for something like redwood or teak will pay dividends in durability over the years.
In fact, one of my favorite outside woods, especially when it’s left to weather to that beautiful silvery gray, is teak. Sure, you can sand and varnish teak every few years, but I’d rather just enjoy my patio.
Adding fabric to the lattice structure will provide some flexibility for shading control as well as soften up its overall aesthetics. Source: Houzz
Pergolas
If your vision of an outdoor space is reminiscent of an Italian garden, a pergola might be the perfect covering for your project. Constructed of wood beams that are oftentimes made of beautiful cedar, pergolas are most often used in garden areas or for outdoor gathering spaces, such as a barbecue area around a pool. The ceiling of a pergola may be flat, curved, or criss-crossed in a lattice type pattern, and the sides can be open, created with a variety of boards cut in the same size, or constructed of one solid piece of board.
Pergolas are not as strong as patio covers or awnings, and they are rarely used on outdoor spaces that need protection from high winds, heavy rains or extreme sunlight. Though a pergola may not be an option for those in need of a stronger, more permanent covering, it is a great addition to an outdoor garden space set up for casual entertaining or simply relaxing among the flowers and shrubs. Source: GreatDayImprovements
Metal
Metal patio covers can be made of many different types of metal materials with the most popular but the most popular material is aluminum. Aluminum patio covers are easy to assemble and install and can be purchased in many different styles, sizes, and colors. Aluminum patio covers are also fairly inexpensive to purchase. The material is durable and can resistant outdoor conditions that cause other materials like wood to deteriorate with time. Insects are another downfall for wood materials but not a problem for metal structures. Source: DenGarden

Hello Middle School!
So Brick Week wrapped up with a drawing last week and Ms. Cox ended up winning the Grand Prize, the Hover Board!
However, she graciously decided to throw her prize back into the drawing and since the MS’s generosity surpassed previous year’s donation levels, we in the Habitat group decided to toss in a few extra prizes to say thank you to all of you who contributed to our fundraiser!
On Monday, we held an extra drawing after school during our HFH meeting and we have 19 extra winners!
If you see your name below, please come by Ms. Patty’s room 3405 for your surprise!
Once Upon a Hutong Cast meeting on Wednesday Lunch time at 11:00-11:20 AM at Black Box. Quick meeting. Please be on time.
Join Terry Townshend, the Beijing Birder for a discussion on how data and research is helping scientists understand the currently unknown migration route of the Beijing Cuckoos, as well as their habitat requirements and the threats they face as a species. Terry will discuss not only the tracking technology that they use to follow Flappy McFlapperson and his friends as they journey across China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and India, but also how that data is used to understand this mysterious bird.
Open to all Middle School students.
Snacks and light refreshments will be provided.
Students who attend the cafe will receive a late pass for their Period 2 classes.
I've been saving and sorting, hunting and hoarding to bring you an amazing selection of items in time for the holidays! This time of year has some pressure involved with finding the "perfect gift" so I wanted to alleviate that by offering A LOT of antique and vintage jewelry (over 70 items), for great prices (no crazy mark ups like you see elsewhere), and a unique selection (lots of stackers and bold pieces as well). I've been saving many of these pieces all year long and I also went through my personal collection again (after many times, with each inspection learning to let go of more and more). Today is the day the items will start going live over on @shopGEMGOSSIP
At first, many of you voted a few weeks ago, wanting me to release everything at once on the same day. I began to like this idea too, until I realized I had over 70 pieces--so could you imagine someone you're following on Instagram posting 70 photos in one day?! That would be SO annoying, so I've decided to list 10 items each day, which will allow everything to be listed before November 1st, plenty of time before the holidays kick in. Hope everyone likes my selection this year and I'm excited for new customers and happy returning customers.
Just some notes:
All pieces shown above are available--if interested email sales@gemgossip.com to inquire!
For those who have placed a photo order, please come to the HS office to collect your photos from 8:00am-4:30pm.

The basement is often the largest but most underused space in the home. Piling it up with storage boxes and old electronics means missing out on a great opportunity to expand your home’s living space. Basement remodeling will not only add more space to your home, it could also boost your selling price.
The basement comes with the advantage of being a large, unobstructed space. This allows you to put it to many uses. You can create a single room or split it up into two or more rooms. Instead of letting it stay dark, musty and unused, consider undertaking a basement remodeling.
When you think about basement remodeling, the first question on your mind is probably what you will turn it into. There is no shortage of ideas. Some homeowners opt to create an extra bedroom or two while others go as far as creating a personal museum down there. This is obviously a big decision and you need to go slow on it. The most important thing is to consider what your greatest need is. If you have a shortage of bedrooms, turn the basement into an extra bedroom. If you work at home and need a home office away from the noisy little ones, a home office it is. If the kids’ toys are cluttering up the living room and causing endless injuries, consider creating a playroom for them.
If there is no pressing need, then you can add a room for entertainment purposes. Some good ideas include a home cinema, a game room, a bar, a kitchenette or even an extra family room or deluxe bathroom for your home spa. If you love photography, you could turn it into your own personal gallery. If you have a priceless collection of sports memorabilia, consider creating a mini museum to enjoy with friends.
You can even create more than one room. Use a creative divider, such as a sliding barn door, to separate the two rooms. You could turn it into two bedrooms, a game room and bar, a kid’s play area and adult game room and so on. Discuss with your contractor what each idea involves. Consider the complexity and cost of each and choose the one you are most comfortable with.
Before going ahead with your project, check what the local code says on basement safety especially if you plan to turn it into a living space such as a bedroom. A basement fire is a major hazard and could cause major damage to your home and even worse, injuries or death. Talk with your contractor about installing basic safety measures such as an egress window, smoke detectors and fire sprinklers. Additionally, check that the basement has been well protected against moisture entry and damage.
To help you get started on basement remodeling, we have put together an in depth article: 8 Awesome Basement Remodeling Ideas, which includes a beverage center, a wine cellar and a private gym.

Funeral Home Dead Body in the Cooler | Mr. Locksmith Halloween Story

Hi, I’m Terry from Mr. Locksmith. This is one of the first jobs I ever had where I ran across a dead body and it was, it was interesting.
We had a customer who owned a funeral home. Really classy place, really good people to work with and I did their locks and they were a really good customer. Then they called me up and said, “We have a problem with the lock on the fridge, it’s sticking and we need it fixed.
And they knew I was a sofety, every time I went there I was nervous. I hadn’t seen dead bodies before.
So, they said I gotta go work on the fridge and they know I’m a softy. They said, “Terry, it’s all- we only have one deceased person inside. Only one and it’s no problem, we’ll be with you.”
Okay. I’ll do it. So I have to go fix this lock. So I go follow the guys, they’re all dressed nice, they’re very professional. Really, really nice people and, but I go into the back room and, and I’m already kinda looking around.
The fridge is there and there’s this stainless steel table like you see on TV. It’s got the drainage thing around it.
It’s freaking me out and I feel like my feet are sticking to the floor. The place is spotless, it’s clean but I’m kinda walking and I kind of like, I feel like I’m sticking but everything is white and stainless and super clean. So he’s with me, he’s a good guy and he opens up the fridge, you know, and it’s meant to hold like, I don’t know, six bodies and the one is in a box.
The Furneral Director said, “Terry, you know, don’t worry.” He’s like, he’s, “The dead will not hurt you.” You know? “Don’t worry Terry,” you know, “This was a very good person,” and he’s trying to be all professional and I’m like, I, I walk through, you know, I walk through the coffin room and I’m in the prep room and I’ve got this fridge with a body inside.
I’ve got one body. He says, he says, “I got three more people coming in so we gotta get this done.” I basically had to replace the old lock, put a new one on. I had everything and I’m kind of like this and he’s go, “Oh, someone’s at the front door.” So he’s leaving me in the room but the body is in a box, I’m in the freezer. I’m replacing the lock. He says, “Terry,” he says, “I’ll be right back. I’m really sorry.” So, you know, ding, ding, ding. He’s going to the, you know, he’s leaving me in the prep room, he’s going through the coffin room.
He’s going to talk to somebody. I’m there, I’m freaked. I’m cool, you know, I’m cool. I’m working on the lock, you know, getting it all together. All of the sudden, I guess the, ’cause the door’s been open, the fan kicks in on the fridge and it’s a big frigging whooooooo. So, first of all, the whoooo, that gets me and then, hanging out the box was some of the body bag and the body bag picec is now flapping, whooo, in the fan and it’s touching me. And I run out of the room as quick as I can. I run into the Furneral guy and he’s coming in and he takes me back in there. It’s the Fridge cooler fan, it’s the piece of the body bag is flapping.
I called it a day. I went home. So that’s my first dead body expericene, not good. I still get a little freaked out over it. It freaks me out to this day. This body bag. Have a good Halloween.
