How Much Do You Need to Prepare to Move Abroad? (According to an Expat)

How Much Do You Need to Prepare to Move Abroad?

This week, Amy, a New Zealand native and seasoned expat, shares how she prepared to move to China.

Here’s what she had to say:

When my partner and I moved to China, we didn’t prepare a thing.

We decided we wanted to travel the world while working to sustain an income. So, we did a TEFL course, applied for a teaching job and landed in China, all in under two months. In the month leading up to us leaving, my partner proposed, and all of a sudden we had a leaving and engagement party to organize.

RELATED: What am I Doing With My Life: How Travel Made me a Writer

These time restrictions combined with blissful ignorance meant we were entirely unprepared. China, how different could it be? We went to school with plenty of Chinese kids in our hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, we knew how to eat with chopsticks, and everyone speaks a little bit of English… right? How wrong we were.

We landed in Fuzhou, China with our backpacking packs half-full for the year we were to live there. For some reason I packed exclusively crop tops to go with my floor length velvet skirt…? On the first night out with our friends I wore a crop top and got hissed and glared at by several older people. My failure to research cultural norms in 3rd tier Chinese cities left me feeling incredibly red-faced and disrespectful.

how to prepare to move abroad

But it was more than just clothing, it was my shock when we stumbled across our first squat toilet. I thought those were just a rumor? No. Squat toilets make up 99.999% of public toilets in China.  (in my opinion) So I sucked it up, took a squat, and pissed on my foot.

Our first morning we were tired and jet lagged, no bother! Wee thought a coffee on the way to school will sort us out. Wrong again! In Fuzhou in 2013, cafĂ© culture was in its infancy and there were no places near us serving anything except warm soy milk.

The list goes on; my horror of watching a chicken being killed by the butcher under our apartment building, my partner wearing fish blood after passing by the hatchet-happy chef to use the facilities out back. Every single thing, every single interaction, every little moment of every day was completely foreign to us. We never really had any idea of what was going on around us.

how to prepare to move abroad

RELATED: 11 Bizarre Ways You’ll Need to Prepare For Life In China

It took us about a month of living off the same three dishes we knew how to order at a restaurant before we thought fuck this. So we set about learning Mandarin, understanding the culture and trying to do things the “Chinese” way.

And sure, I know how stupid we sound, we were young and naive and had lived our lives in absolute comfort in Auckland. We had no idea what we were getting into.  We couldn’t conceptualize how different Fuzhou would be, because we simply had never lived that experience before arriving there. Imagining how different it would be from our normal lives just wasn’t a possibility.

how to prepare to move abroad

RELATED: How To Travel Without Money

Looking back, I wish we would have packed better and learnt some Mandarin before making the big move. But the truth is that we worked with people who had packed properly and could speak some Mandarin, and knowing all of this never made any one of them more prepared. Emotionally, mentally, it is draining living in a country so foreign to your own. You can never prepare enough. The only way to prepare is by being there and living the experience.

how to prepare to move abroad

So to answer the question – how prepared do you really need to be to move to somewhere like China? Well, that’s up to you. Really all you need to prepare is your sense of adventure.

…And your passport.

Elegant Bathroom Designs

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Every room in the house should be decorated according to its function and with the right decorating designs as well. Architectural designers have come up with different methods of improving a home to attain the modern and classic look, and these inventions include how to make a bathroom stand out just like the rest of the house. There are different ideas that one can use in designing the bathroom, but the most important thing to consider is its size. The space or scope of the bathroom helps you determine the kind of fixtures to incorporate and the best designs as well.

luxurious-bathroom-designs-elegant-modern-bathroom-design

Elegant Bathroom Designs.

The Material

Now homeowners have discovered the excellent ways of building easy to clean bathrooms with the use of marble, granite, and porcelain. These three materials are soft to touch and come in different colors that give your bathroom a modern and elegant look. It is easy to maintain the elements regarding cleaning since they only require you to wipe them with a cloth.Another area to focus on when selecting the material is the floor. The bathroom floor tends to get water all the time when people are taking showers or even when cleaning the surfaces. Therefore, instead of investing in the old design of adding carpets on the floor, now people are adding tiles. Also instead of using fabric curtains, you can use opaque glass doors which are comfortable to maintain and does not get attacked by mildew or mold.

The Colors

The colors are other excellent designs to consider when it comes to modeling a bathroom. When it comes to small and large bathroom renovations, the colors that you use to determine how the bathroom would appear. For example, there are some colors such as white, beige and cream that cause the bathroom to look more prominent. Also, neutral colors are easy to maintain and go well with any bathroom. If these colors seem to be a bit dull to you, you can add some boldness on other fixtures in the bathroom such as the bathtub, the faucets and also the lightings.

The Fixtures

Add your own taste of fixtures when designing a bathroom. There are different designs of bathroom fixtures such as the bathtub, the sinks, shower heads and also you can add some style when choosing the kind of lighting to use in the bathroom. For example, you can use chandelier lighting in the middle part of the ceiling.

Lighting

Lighting is another excellent design that a lot of people are focusing on. Your bathroom requires enough illumination just like the rest of the house, and therefore, there should be good lighting. For homeowners, this design can help you attract a lot of potential buyers mainly when you use unique and bright bathroom lighting fixtures. Some of the ideas to add when designing the bathroom lighting include the kind of light to use; maybe you can use crystal chandelier and also consider using other bold colored like led bulbs.

Conclusion

Let your bathroom pop up with the use of the above designing ideas. Make sure you work with an experienced designer so they can help you regarding how to put in place the different designs. Also, use other ideas like adding portraits on the walls of the bathroom if space allows you would be awesome.

The Perfect Jewelry Gift for an Expectant Mother

Amalia Fine Jewelry | Gem GossipAmalia Fine Jewelry | Gem Gossip Amalia Fine Jewelry | Gem Gossip Amalia Fine Jewelry | Gem Gossip Amalia Fine Jewelry | Gem Gossip

So many of my friends, family, neighbors, and people in my life are expecting a new baby and when I'm close enough with that person, I know getting them a gift becomes a priority for me!  Being in my line of profession, you can bet that a piece of jewelry will be my gift of choice (you'll never catch me at a baby shower with a tower of diapers scultped into a shape or animal, that's for sure)! When I'm buying a piece of jewelry for a new mother, I often opt for something that is customized or personalized. I like doing monogram jewelry or birthstone jewelry, however lately I've noticed a trend happening with new babies, maybe you've noticed it too? Mothers aren't revealing baby names anymore until the birth and many have been keeping due dates tight-lipped. This leaves me even more clueless when customizing a baby gift!  I recently had a close friend who was due in December actually give birth in November, so luckily I didn't order a birthstone pendant like I thought I was going to!

Luckily, I stumbled upon a line of fine children's jewelry that is both affordable and is personalized called Amalia Children's Fine Jewelry. For example, their enameled safety pins are 18k yellow gold and come in either blue or pink, which makes it easy on the buyer because most people at least reveal the gender. It makes it personal enough with the color options (without being too custom, where you can't return something if it ends up being wrong), and with a great pricetag of $135 for a real piece of fine jewelry which can be an investment to the newborn baby! You can't go wrong! For most people, gifting diapers or clothes is the first choice, but to me, I see it as the baby will grow out of these clothes within a few weeks! So gifting a piece of jewelry is a better choice and a good investment in the long run.

I got the opportunity to check out both the pink and blue versions myself and I absolutely love them. They are ideal for the mom-to-be to wear on her charm necklace or hung from a thin gold chain. She can acquire one for every son or daughter she has, and eventually pass it along in the family as an heirloom. It is simple enough yet highly sentimental and personal. The quality is top-notch as well, as both sides of the safety pin are enameled and it opens and shuts with ease.

So as the baby announcements continue to be celebrated, know that this is the perfect gift and keep this blog bookmarked for future reference!  I know it will come in handy for me and I can't wait to gift something that is valuable and timeless.

3 Minimalist Bathroom Design Ideas

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

There’s no need to spend tons of money on a spa retreat if you have a minimalist bathroom that is just as comforting. You can easily achieve this look by doing the following tips:

Photo by Jared Rice on Unsplash

Don’t store too many things
Just because you have the extra storage space, doesn’t mean you need to fill it completely. Keeping empty space empty and only using what you really need is essential to achieving minimalism in the bathroom. Source: Contemporist

Go for a consolidated look
‘Try to unify the space with one colour or material to achieve a clean and unified look,’ says Straughan. ‘Matte grey tiles would be the perfect base to let your other fittings pop, in particular oversized tiles are a super fashionable choice. Other materials like marble, wood or polished concrete will also achieve that clean look as long as the style isn’t too flashy.’ Source: HouseBeautiful

Don’t be afraid to display a few essentials
A lacquered tray filled with jewelry, perfume bottles and soaps. A trio of vases displaying flowers in pastel tones. A countertop display of grooming products, such as hair gel, deodorant and face wash. These are NOT the type of features you will find in a minimalist bathroom. Not that there’s anything wrong with them! But no-fuss spaces keep the bulk of the grooming products and cushy details hidden, instead choosing to highlight a few key pieces. Like a clear vase filled with one or two blooms, or lotion displayed in a crystalline canister. Source: Decoist

Out with the old, in with the new!

4 signs that it’s time for new underwear

When was the last time you did a big clothing purge? (And before you think we’re all sweaters, jeans and jumpers, we’re not – we’re inspecting the panty pile) Oh yes, the undies drawer is getting a clean out! A good bra and panties can last years, but only if you take really good care of them.

Not sure if it’s time to toss your undergarments? These are some obvious tell-tale signs that they’ve given up the ghost.

They WERE sexy, NOW they’re stretchy!

Undies are not like wine; they don’t get better with age! In fact, after a while you may notice a fray here, fade there. Truth is, over time the elastic in the waistband eventually wears out, causing them to lose their shape — and potentially fall off your body. The same goes for your brassiere. “If your bra is no longer stretchy in the straps or back, it won’t offer the proper support,” says Lexie Sachs, a textiles product analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute.

They’re a little smaller than you remember

Because underwear is washed so often, shrinkage can be expected, especially if they’re made of cotton. You don’t want to cut off your circulation or be sentenced to a day of discomfort – ditch any briefs that may feel a little too tight for your tush!

When it comes to your bra, your breasts probably change way more than you realize, so that bra that was once a perfect fit might be causing you some problems including back pain. And while not as problematic as back-pain, no lady wants her tatas turning downwards either! Spillage, or a band that doesn’t lay horizontal, and tightness (even on the last clasp), are all signs your bra is too small.

You’d rather go commando!

This should be a given, but if you have a pair of undies that just don’t feel right — it’s time to toss them! Especially if you’re a fan of the lacy version. These delicate pieces can – after multiple washes – get rough and irritating. According to Mona Gohara, M.D and Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, scratchy or irritating underwear can cause cysts and other symptoms.

You stayed in shape, they didn’t!

If the padding or cups of your bra shift and rumple, it’s time to buy a new one, says Sachs. The last thing you want are gaps or bulges — your cups should align with your breast. Otherwise, you’re not getting the support you need, which is why you want to be wearing a bra in the first place.

Even though your undergarments might now show these signs of wear-and-tear right away, you should still plan a cupboard clear-out every six to 12 months. It ain’t all bad news though, even if you have to let go of your favourite polka-dot panties, you won’t have to get rid of your favourite bra so soon, if you simply rotating them regularly!

How This Couple Travels The World For Free By Housesitting

How This Couple Travels The World For Free By Housesitting

I’m happy to introduce Faith, of XYU and Beyond. Her and her husband sold everything they owned and hit the road. Now, they travel, housesit, and blog about their adventures.

Find out how they went from a stable life to traveling around the world for very little cost.

Our kids wouldn’t run away from home so we did.

It’s true! We have told our kids for years they should up and travel the world while they are young. But, as usual, they didn’t listen. So we decided when the opportunity came up to retire early we would run away ourselves.

In 2014, after hoping and planning for an early retirement for two decades, we decided to move to Mexico. We figured that with our tiny little pension we could easily afford to move there and live for a while. And then, when our government pensions kicked in, we figured we could go out and travel the world – well some of it anyways.

Travel for free with housesitting

Alan and Pooka in Ireland

After 30 years of working at the post office, my husband Alan, had taken early retirement in 2014. I had a job in the not-for-profit world but it was exhausting as I worked for up to 60 hours a week.

So, late in 2014 we began to divest ourselves of all the stuff we had accumulated over the years. We fixed up our house and put it on the market, gave the old photos to the kids and donated everything that didn’t sell. When the house sold, we packed up everything we wanted to move with us and promptly booked our flights for Merida, Mexico.

Upon arriving in Mexico, we headed to Chelem and got ourselves sorted with a rental property right on the gulf front. It was heaven, we had a lovely 3-bedroom house with a small pool gulf side from where we could float, watch the dolphins play, and see the flamingos flying into the Ria. We got all of this for less than $1000 Canadian a month.

Faith in Spain

We loved living in Mexico but we had this dream of living in Europe, wandering medieval streets, drinking espressos in the cafes, eating tapas in Spain, and taking advantage of all Europe has to offer. Unfortunately, our income just wouldn’t stretch to that kind of exploring, or so we thought.

We began thinking more and more about the opportunities presented by housesitting and working online. So we began to investigate the possibilities and we set up an online social media marketing business to help generate income.

One day while hanging out on Facebook, we came across a call for help in Progreso. There was a young Canadian couple who were on a housesit and needed to fly home to Toronto. They had no one to take over the sit, so we volunteered. We dropped by to meet them and see if the owner would allow us to take over for them. We passed their screening and we began housesitting there almost immediately.

Travel for free with housesitting

My office in Cyrpus

After that sit we looked after friends’ dogs and cats when they made journeys home or over to Europe. We found we really enjoyed the lifestyle. So, we joined a couple of housesitting platforms and began searching for a housesit that we could take on.

One day we got a message from the young folks who we had jumped in to cover for. They asked if we were going to be in Toronto in July (this was 2015). As it happened, we were planning on going home for a visit to see our friends and family so the timing was perfect. We were invited to come to Toronto and look after a gorgeous home in High Park and a beauty of a German shepherd for six weeks while the homeowners got married in Hawaii.

At that point, all the housesits we had applied for from Mexico began to come to fruition. We were invited to spend eight weeks in Tipperary, Ireland looking after seven dogs and one cat.

Then, we got an invite to come and stay in Berkshire for nine weeks in the picturesque English countryside. After that, we housesat in Dublin with three tiny little dogs. From there we headed to Donegal, Ireland and then onto Yorkshire in England. From Yorkshire we went to Spain and from Spain, we headed to Cyprus.

Right now we are in Northern Ireland for a 6-month sit in Game of Thrones territory.  Housesitting isn’t for everyone as it is not a vacation, when looking after someone’s pets and home there is always something to be done.

Travel for free with housesitting

Glen of Aherlow in Tipperary – our housesitting view

Walking the animals, feeding them, caring for them if they need medications, taking care of the house and garden, and ensuring the security of the home is paramount. With most housesits, you can’t get away for more than four hours at a time.

You may have to get up a 6 am to walk the dog or feed the chickens. Some homeowners can be somewhat difficult to deal with and others become lifelong friends.  If this is something you might be interested in, bookmark this article and head over to my website where you can check out Housesitting for Newbies as well as read our Homeowner from Hell article and learn when not to take on a housesit.
