Southern Hospitality at its Finest at Lillie’s Q

Brea’s Lillie’s Q Restaurant is the first location west of the Mississippi. Guests enjoy the same award-winning barbeque, unique cocktails and warm ambiance created at their original Chicago flagship location. Chef Charlie McKenna opened the doors in July 2010 after graduating from CIA and honing his skills at top restaurants in Miami, New York and Chicago. Named after his Grandmother Lillie, now in her 80’s, who taught him the art of southern cooking back home in Greenville, South Carolina and is the inspiration behind many of the dishes.

We went to check out the Southern Sunday Brunch and it was bountiful. This is a brunch in which you must arrive hungry because the menu is very hearty. The buffet is comprised of about 75 percent of the regular menu with such treats as a carving station featuring brisket which is smoked and slow cooked for 14 hours and was melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

I’ll get back to the food in a moment. Drew Blackburn, the mixologist came over and took our cocktail order. My guest had the Morning Lillie, a take on a bloody Mary, with Georgia Moon moonshine garnished with okra, celery, a pickled egg and a meat stick. I, on the other hand, went for the Kentucky Mule, Buffalo Trace Whiskey and ginger beer and it was so refreshing on this hot summer afternoon. They offer over 40 all-American craft beers, plus specialty moonshine-based cocktails and other standards. For wine drinkers, they have a nice variety on tap.

McKenna handed the baton to Executive Chef Kody Havener, who started cooking at the age of 12 with his mother. After high school, he went to Riverside Community College Culinary Academy from 2006-2007 and graduated top of his class. From there, he worked mainly at mom and pop restaurants for the next few years, while earning his degree. In 2012. He joined the TAPS Fish House and Brewery family and started off as a line cook and soon jumped the ranks to Kitchen Manager than Sous Chef at TAPS Corona. After his second year there, he was approached and asked to be the Chef at Lillie’s Q. For the last two years, he has been Executive Chef and has loved each and every day ever since.

Now back to the brunch menu. “Starters” include delicate pork rinds with pimento cheese powder, Kool-Aid pickles, LQ Southern chopped salad, Q salad with apple cider vinegar and blue cheese, freshly made potato salad, chicken salad, Southern-style coleslaw, sliced watermelon and fresh strawberries.

The carving station is to die for, featuring Prime Brisket as I previously mentioned. Also on the cutting board, a smoked turkey breast with a third rotating meat—be it Honey Ham, Tri-Tip, etc. Guests can enhance the savory barbecue with Chef Charlie McKenna’s renowned Lillie’s Q sauces—everything thing from Smoky, Hot Smoky, Carolina, E.N.C., Ivory, Carolina Gold to a Hot Pepper Vinegar which are found on each table. FYI- the line of barbecue sauces are available for sale at the restaurant and have made their way into Sur La Table, Whole Foods, Target and Albertsons.

Some of the stand-outs presented were the creamy stone-ground grits (from South Carolina), collard greens, green beans, bacon (which I crumbled over the grits and mac-n-cheese), cinnamon nutmeg pancakes, baked beans, mac-n-cheese, tilapia two ways, roasted potatoes, sausage, Lillie’s Brunswick stew (tomato, smoked pork, smoked chicken, corn, Lima beans), fire roasted corn and biscuits and gravy. They also had salads, with a variety of dressings. Chef Kody told me that the menu does have some changes from week to week.

On top of the buffet is a petite, yet smart “Made-To-Order” menu which includes The Pig Lover Omelet, bacon, ham, hot sausage, pulled pork and white cheddar. The Gardener, a healthy take on an omelet comprised of egg whites, spinach, onions, tomato, roasted corn and pimentos and a Memphis Breakfast Burrito with scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, pulled pork and a side of salsa verde.

lillieq chick & waffle                       CHICKEN & WAFFLES

We sampled one of my favorites, the Chicken n’ Waffles, consisting of Lillie’s irresistible smoked fried chicken breast and Chef Kody’s family waffle recipe drizzled with grade A Vermont maple syrup and absolutely loved it. This was the embodiment of comfort food on every level.

The Southern Eggs Benedict was a fun and tasty take on the classic. In this case, a combination of a warm fresh biscuit, country ham, poached egg, fried green tomato slathered in hot mess hollandaise sauce was divine.

Who doesn’t love Steak and Eggs? Well, vegetarians and vegans, but the rest of us can indulge in this superb thinly sliced smoked tri-tip and a poached egg atop fried potatoes and when that poached egg burst over the potatoes it transformed into the perfect flavor and texture profile.

Desserts were plentiful, including Grandma Lillie’s famous Banana Pudding, Cobbler and Brownies. How often to you get to “build your own shortcake”? Options include Lillie’s biscuits, strawberries or fruit of the season and whipped cream; a luscious chocolate fountain with assorted dippers complete the impressive selection.

On the second round of cocktails we tried the Champagne Smash with fresh mint, 3 lemon slices and simple syrup muddled, 2 ounces of even Williams Bourbon, crushed ice and champagne to top it off. I could drink those all day!

A shout out to the dinner menu! Give me those Baby Back Ribs, coated in Carolina dirt and apple glaze served with two sides (Mac-n-Cheese and Brussels Sprouts) that brought my five senses alive and gave new meaning to the term finger-licking-good.

lillieq ribs 2               BABY BACK RIBS

Another must-have entrĂ©e is a Southern staple, Shrimp and Grits. The Shrimp was tender and juicy and the creamy grits soothe the soul. What sets this dish apart from the rest is the Lillie’s sauce; it’s a Creole broken butter sauce and was heavenly.

As I mentioned, most of the items in the Brunch are on the regular menu and all of the meats are available in a sandwich. Lillie’s Q brings down home Southern cooking to Southern California in their own loving way.

If you are reading this from Chicago or plan on traveling there, they have two locations in the Windy City and one in Florida. Info on the website below.

Boy, were bucket list items being checked off rapidly on this #JewelryRoadTrip to Seattle! Alana Jewelry has been high on my list of places I wanted to see for SO long now. It was about a 30 minute drive from Hotel Vintage in Downtown Seattle, and it was nice to get out of the city and explore more. Alana Jewelry is located in the Northgate Mall and has been there since day one! The store is easy to get to if you park near JC Penney or near the food court. Who would have ever thought that some of the best antique jewelry in the country is located in a place where you can buy some Auntie Anne's pretzels, find your inner goth at Hot Topic and call it a day?! I was actually feeling quite emo after all the jewelry that Alana has to offer--it is mind-blowing in the best way possible! They love being located inside a mall for many reasons, for one the foot traffic alone is seriously good. Countless sales have been made from people who didn't intend on going to a jewelry store to buy jewelry, but they happened to be at a mall to buy something else on their list, and the jewelry found them!

The first thing I noticed and what stood out to me were their displays! They are unlike anything I've seen--everything has a place, everything tells a story. There's old black & white photographs mixed in with a few other trinkets here and there, but for the most part--every display matches, using a clean beige color display. A few black velvet ones can be spotted for certain sections, but for the most part, everything has a consistent flow. Most importantly, height is used to an advantage, where you have almost a "stadium-seating" effect with the jewelry displays, so everything can be packed in tighter. This means eye candy galore! And it's ok if you stand in front of a small section and zone out.  I know I sure did.

It was such an honor to meet the founder and owner Alana herself and hear her story in her own words rather than via email. If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you may remember I did a blog post featuring the store back in January of 2015. You can read the blog post here. It tells the story of Alana Antique & Estate Jewelry, how it came to be and the story is so inspiring, all written by Alana herself. You totally should read the post before you go on--it will take about 4 minutes! ;) I also got to meet Heather, Alana's daughter, as well as a few sales associates of the store.

I tried on so many pieces!  It was really hard to choose just a select few, but I thought of it as, "if I were to be able to buy whatever I wanted right now, what would I choose?!" Of course, I chose a lot of rings, pieces that were really unique and also had to hone in on the best opals I could find. I learned that Alana Jewelry doesn't have to look far for the jewelry they sell, it comes to them! They are constantly buying in store and have special buying hours for those interested in selling.  Alana Jewelry has continually been ranked highest sales per square foot in the mall, a title Alana is really proud of, as if you could remember from her original story she was breaking out in hives the first day she opened their doors to the public. Now over 20 years later, she has so much joy from the store she can't even begin to describe it.

This store visit has brought ME so much joy, thanks everyone at Alana Jewelry for showing me your wonderful store. I can't wait to tell everyone about it and hopefully the next time someone visits Seattle, they make the trip out of downtown and to the Northgate Mall to see you!

Tottenham Hotspur 2016/17 Tactics: Pochettino’s push to glory

After pushing Leicester City all the way for the Premier League final last term, Spurs eventually fell at the final hurdle and ended up finishing third behind arch-rivals Arsenal. With a young squad now boasting an extra year of experience, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be expected to perform positively this term.

The Lilywhites have invested in the right areas for the forthcoming campaign but will have the added challenge of balancing Champions League football alongside their domestic competitions, with many of the squad set for their first test at this level. However, they’ve all shown that they should be capable.

Pochettino’s squad boasts a lot of strength in depth, so they could be able to challenge on all fronts.

Formation-Spurs

Hugo Lloris will continue between the sticks for Tottenham and it was pivotal that they landed a Champions League spot this term, otherwise the French international would have demanded an exit. Fortunately, they reached their objectives and the Spurs captain will shine behind an unchanged back-line.

Kyle Walker and Danny Rose will attack down the flanks as flying wing-backs, though both are also capable of defence, but the stand-out area of Spurs’ back-line is in the middle. Jan Vertonghen has excelled since moving to the Premier League and he’s formed a formidable partnership alongside compatriot Toby Alderweireld.

Tottenham now have added protection in midfield following the acquisition of Victor Wanyama, a player who previously played for Pochettino during the Argentine’s spell at Southampton, and his partnership with breakthrough star Eric Dier will allow the rest of the midfield to push further forward whilst not leaving Spurs vulnerable to counter-attacks.

Dele Alli may be forced to play a bit wider than he would have liked, although his role is likely to be fluid and allow a lot of movement, with Christian Eriksen in the centre doing similar. Erik Lamela, on the other flank, will also be a crucial part of the Spurs attack and the Argentine is also likely to drift between roles.

Tactics-Spurs

With such a dynamic attacking-midfield trio, the opposition will find it difficult to track each player and defend, which may lead to additional space for lone-striker Harry Kane to exploit- which is a dangerous prospect, given the England international’s record in front of goal during the past few years.

Another new signing, Vincent Janssen, will provide back-up to Kane and will ease the pressure on the young striker, whilst Pochettino can also call upon the likes of Son Heung-Min, Moussa Dembele and Nacer Chadli from the bench. Pochettino is also likely to chop and change his starting line-up ahead of crucial games in Europe, which should give the majority of the squad plenty of playing time.

The history behind the next stop on my Seattle #JewelryRoadTrip is quite fascinating. Just a block away from Hotel Vintage where we were staying, the walk to Fox's Seattle was easy and beautiful.  Upon entering the shop I knew it was unlike any other place I've been to before.

Open since 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, US suffragettes paraded NYC, and Arizona & New Mexico were admitted into the US as official states, Fox's opened its doors to the public. The shop sold mostly gems, little knick knacks, and some jewelry, taking a chance at this fortuitous business. It was unfortunately struggling and needed to be sold. It was then purchased by Sid Thal in 1948, keeping its name Fox's Gem Shop only because the new owners couldn't afford to paint over the sign.

The store grew over time, eventually becoming the leading retailer in fine jewelry, but had always been a labor of love for Sid Thal and his wife. Sid apparently was quite the character! Known around town in the social scene and iconic for driving around a Classic Austin "London Cab" and sporting a British bowler hat. These attributes were later used to help market the jewelry store. Their daughter, Joy Thal joined the family business in 1975, along with her artistic husband Chai Mann, and have been at it ever since! It was such an honor to meet the pair during my visit.  They have a discerning eye when it comes to jewelry as well as being able to articulately create a luxurious space for said jewelry.

I spent most of my time while visiting Fox's with Chai & Joy's daughter Zoey who officially began working at the store in 2003, where her stint was only supposed to be temporary, but she obviously fell in love with everything about the jewelry world. She was named President in 2013. Most recently Fox's changed their name from Fox's Gem Shop to Fox's Seattle and moved locations to where it situates today, just outside The Fairmount Olympic Hotel. Calling the store beautiful is quite the understatement. My visit lined up well with the unveiling of their newly launched Todd Reed boutique, the only jewelry store to have a mini boutique consisting of Todd Reed anywhere else!

Fox's Seattle is quite proud of the designers they feature, as they are invested in them emotionally, which radiates through and through! They have been a huge fan and supporter of Alex Sepkus and his work, carrying his jewelry for over 25 years! Fox's loves Alex Sepkus' one-of-a-kind pieces and they make certain they get dibs on his very best. I was enchanted by their selection of his pieces--I had to create a cool stack incorporating his work. Fox's taught me that every piece is finished by hand under a microscope!

I love learning about new designers--the longer I'm in this industry, the less I am actually already familiar with, so finding someone new is exhilarating! Enter SUWA, a Japanese jewelry company known for their precision when setting stones. They follow the facet pattern on every gem to position it in exact alignment with its neighbor. I loved their rough diamond octahedron pendants and totally want one! They do some incredible things with rough diamonds as well as faceted.

Mixing Fox's designer repertoire was seamless--case in point: my stack featuring Todd Reed, Atelier Zobel, and Arman. Big names, bold looks. Like jewelry a little more on the dainty side? Fox's Seattle has you covered too!  A favorite designer, Sethi Couture bring on the layer-ready delights, each meant to be passed down through generations. Their selection of Gurhan Jewelry is also quite top notch. I died a little over the 24k yellow gold spike necklace.  I'm sure it has a legitimate name, but I'm going to call it the spike necklace!

Thanks everyone at Fox's Seattle for welcoming me into your gorgeous store! It was so great meeting everyone and sharing your passion for a few hours...I can see why you are so proud of the legacy of this store and it will no doubt flourish for years to come! If you're in the Seattle area, be sure to stop by, you won't want to miss it!
